Although local classics such as Sinista Funk and Da Resurrection solidified Al Kapone’s reputation as one of biggest stars in Memphis’ underground hip-hop scene, his key contributions to the film soundtrack for Hustle & Flow took his career to the next level. The veteran MC, who has earned a loyal following through his contemplative and street savvy lyricism, has recently started to explore other genres, working alongside Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All-Stars and local blues guitarist Eric Gales. Under the name A.K. Bailey, he recently released the album Hip Hop Blues, which showcases his love for two of his hometown’s greatest cultural exports. “I like all styles of music. I tend to create different styles of music through hip-hop,” he explains.
