The list of musical genres that are encompassed within Los Lobos’ distinctive sound is so long and varied that it would almost be easier to name the styles they haven’t experimented with. For the past 50 years, the Los Angeles band has delivered a bracing mixture of rock, blues, Tex-Mex, zydeco, country, R&B, and folk that is always impressively cohesive. The band, which became international stars in 1987 with their cover of Richie Valens’ “La Bamba,” is often cited as one of the greatest acts in Latino rock history. With four Grammys and a National Heritage Fellowship award under their belts, it’s a hard point to argue.
