Prior to Shaggy’s emergence in the early 90s, most Americans weren’t familiar with dancehall, the infectiously danceable subgenre of reggae that was developed in Jamaica in the 1970s. In the ensuing years, he proved to not only be the genre’s first international breakout star, but arguably its most enduring as well. With the success of chart-topping party anthems like “Bombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me,” and “Angel,” Shaggy produced some of the biggest-selling reggae albums ever. In July 2020, Shaggy celebrated the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album Hot Shot with the release of an updated version of the record called Hot Shot 2020. Like all of his work, it was a celebration of his Jamaican roots that also included elements of pop, hip-hop, and R&B.
