About the artwork

The text on the tip bucket is an homage to George Hunt. I remember George telling me about how he learned lettering and how that became an important aspect of his work as a way of supporting the communication of his ideas.

I observed and photographed different musicians in a variety of music venues around the city. Some of the features that I gave them are inspired by the styles and personalities of many local celebrities The bright colors express the rich culture and vibrant sounds that come from Memphis music.

The singing woman with the heart symbol and the microphone shows love for the city, and is also meant to be a sign of healing for some of the more troubled aspects that Memphis has suffered in recent times. It also honors the influential people that the city has lost.

About the artist

Danny Broadway is an accomplished Memphis artist whose popular work has appeared at galleries and art venues across the nation. His work has been featured on PBS Television and with the Memphis Grizzlies, FedEx, Major League Baseball, and the National Civil Rights Museum along with numerous commissions from Fortune 500 companies.

Broadway holds an MFA from the Watkins College of Art at Bellmont University as well as a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Memphis, where a collection of his paintings was featured as part of the university’s Black History Month. Broadway is inspired by historical themes, family stories, current issues, people, music, sounds, moods, and books. His palette changes with the seasons too: bright in the summer, darker in winter.
